Exercise and Nutrition

April 7th, 2011

Jack LaLanne, widely known for nutrition and juicing passed away last month at the age of 96. Jack was trained as a chiropractor and shared the message of health and wellness. He believed it is never too late to change your exercise and nutrition habits. One of Jack’s quotes, “Exercise is king, nutrition is queen, put them together and you’ve got a kingdom” is a great quote that Americans can live by.

Flexibility and Heart Health

March 18th, 2011

Flexibility is one of the three portions of fitness, along with cardio and strength training, though many Americans forego the stretching portion of their exercise routine. You may want to re-think skipping out on the stretching as a 2009 study published in the American Journal of Physiology has linked increased flexibility to decreased heart risk for heart attacks and strokes.

Dr. Winchester and Dr. Sneyd, along with the rehabilitation specialists at The Winchester Institute, will help customize a routine to help you reach your goals. Contact the office at (614)-760-5555 or www.thewinchesterinstitute.com if you’d like us to help you reach your goals.

Musculoskeletal Pain During Pregnancy

February 9th, 2011

A recent study shows that the majority of pregnant women do not change their gait to accommodate for the anatomical changes of their body during pregnancy, despite the “waddling gait” that many soon-to-be moms feel they adopt. Thus, there may be increased stress on the hip abductors, hip extensors, and ankle plantar flexor muscles during walking that can cause musculoskeletal pain during pregnancy.

At The Winchester Institute, Dr. Winchester and Dr. Sneyd know that with the changes of a pregnant woman’s body, it is important to strengthen the musculoskeletal system to prevent unnecessary pain during this time.  It is our goal to allow a mother to be as comfortable as possible by helping them to manage the many demands of pregnancy. Contact us at (614)-760-5555 or www.TheWinchesterInstitute.com to see if we can help with your comfort during your pregnancy.

Stabilize that Core

January 13th, 2011

Current research has proven that sucking in your abdomen to activate the transverse abdominis may actually cause instability of the spine. To properly brace your spine a person should contact their core as if they were going to take a blow to the stomach.

Stir the Pot

January 6th, 2011

One of the best core stability exercises not currently utilized by many patients is the “stir the pot” exercise. The patient will assume a push-up position but place his/her elbows or forearms on a Swiss ball. They then move their elbows in a circle keeping their core as stable as possible.
