Jumping incorrectly, especially if you are a female, can lead to long term complications. The “Unhappy Triad” as it is called, is a common problem, particularly in females that jump as part of their sport of choice. Luckily, proper jumping technique can reduce your chance of injury. The unhappy triad consists of an ACL tear, MCL tear and meniscus tear, likely resulting in surgery for the injured athlete.
Many of these injuries can be prevented through proper biomechanics. If you’ve had a prior knee injury, or are unsure if you biomechanics are correct, contact The Winchester Institute at 614-760-5555 or www.thewinchesterinstitute.com so that one of our rehab specialists may evaluate your jump and help prevent future injuries.

Many patients present to the office for low back pain and headaches, but recently we’ve noticed a trend in the number of golfers and tennis players in the office. They typically make an appointment for another symptom, but we quickly start to hear about how they have stopped their beloved activity of golf or tennis due to pain around the elbow.

Tendonitis can happen in multiple joints and can typically be treated conservatively with chiropractic adjustments to restore proper function and motion to the joint, combined with rehabilitation and massage therapy to stretch and strengthen the soft tissue around the joint. Dr. Winchester and Dr. Sneyd have worked with multiple patients to help them to get back to their favorite activities. Contact The Winchester Institute at 614-760-5555 or www.thewinchesterinstitute.com if your pain is holding you back.

They also typically have structural changes on x-ray including a decreased neck curvature. This can often lead to accelerated degenerative change in the spine.

Chiropractic care, as well as focusing on flexibility and stabilization of the spine and surrounding tissues, is of utmost importance to those who sit at a desk. Ergonomics are also important, which Dr. Winchester and Dr. Sneyd stress with their patients.

Any parent who has lifted their child’s backpack recently knows why there is such a concern for backpack safety. To decrease the opportunity for back pain to creep into your child’s life, be sure to follow these simple steps. First, pick a backpack with wide straps. Then make sure that the child wears both straps while keeping the backpack high enough on the back to distribute weight over the shoulders, not resting on the hips. If your child is rolling their shoulders and back forward, there is likely too much weight in the backpack. Try decreasing the amount of weight the child needs to carry.

No child should be haveback pain. If you have a child complaining of pain, contact The Winchester Institute at 614-760-5555 or at www.thewinchesterinstitute.com for information about how chiropractic care may be able to restore motion to the spine and decrease the aches and pains your child experiences.

Shoulder injuries are the most common type of injury to volleyball players. With many students gearing up for the season, it is important to prepare the teams to combat injuries. Most shoulder injuries are overuse injuries due to multiple overhead motions. To decrease the likelihood of this type of injury, it is important to properly strengthen and stretch not only the shoulder, but also the back and chest to provide additional support to the shoulder joint. It is also important to allow time for proper stretching before and after practice and games as well as proper time for healing between events.

If you are suffering from shoulder discomfort, call The Winchester Institute at 614-760-5555 or visit us at www.thewinchesterinstitute.com for more information on non-invasive rehabilitation techniques.
